I never had a relationship with my Dad for twenty-four years. Twenty-three years because he’s been locked up my whole life, almost. When I was fifteen, I started to do drugs, pills, and drinking. I took one ecstasy pill. Then it was all over from there. I loved it. So I was going through about seven hundred dollars a week worth of it. Then I was making about eight hundred a week. I joined a gang at eighteen years old. I was with them for a while. I decided to get out of it once I got locked up. I was getting tired of seeing my friends get shot down in front of me and die in my arms. I went to jail and I was looking at twenty-five to life. When I was in the cop car on the way to jail, I just asked God that if He could get me out of this soon, then I will follow Him and I will never look back. And He did. Then the chaplain of the jail had come up to us and asked us if we wanted to come to Christ then to say this prayer. I said it. Right after that, I felt like a changed man. I have been clean now for five years. I work for Little Caesars and I have been called to preach. So I’m studying up on that right now. Me and my Dad, we talk on a daily basis. We’re starting to grow a relationship slowly. I went to go see him two years ago. I was going there for all of the wrong intentions. I wanted to fight him and just get all of my rage and anger out on him. We met him at his house and then went out to eat with his sponsor, which is also a pastor. I told him that I came here with the wrong intentions and I do want a relationship with you but it will take some time, though. So we slowly started talking once a week. Then it got to once every day. Now it’s like four times a day. He’ll call me. He’ll text me. We are trying to get closer than what we are now.
